This was one of my favourite cartoons growing up and, to be honest, I don't even remember exactly what happened in most of the episodes. What I do remember is being completely enamoured by the characters. They were gorgeous — and I am a sucker for beauty!
So let me list my top 3 favourite characters and why:
Sailor Mercury
I love Sailor Mercury because she is highly intelligent and the brains and strategist of the group. She is sweet and somewhat shy. She uses her analytical mind and water powers to assess enemy weaknesses. I relate to this character in the sense that she was quite misunderstood. Her quiet, studious nature led people to believe she was arrogant and snobby — something many people have thought about me simply because I kept to myself. Sailor Mercury takes her studies seriously and is considered a genius who has an IQ of 300. But perhaps my favourite trait of her character is that she is reasonable: calm, sensible, and level-headed.
Sailor Neptune
She is elegant, sophisticated, and entirely refined. Sailor Neptune has this dreamy look which sets her apart from the rest. She is the ultimate princess. She is very pragmatic and fiercely dedicated to her goals which I love about her. I love a focused ambitious lady. I love her uncompromising, cold, and calculating nature. Sailor Neptune is also a talented violinist, my favourite musical instrument. Her intelligence manifests through art and music. Her deep intuition allows her to read into situations with remarkable foresight.
Sailor Mars
Sailor Mars is the real OG. She is a warrior and driven by her desire to be in control of her fate and life, and vehemently hates being controlled by others. A loner by nature, she prefers to depend on herself. Perhaps one thing that defines her character is her bad relationship with her father. My favourite characteristic of Sailor Mars is her ambition and her outer pride. She is very wary of men and distrustful of them, mainly keeping her focus on being a stern shrine maiden who is sensible and polite. She possess psychic powers that forewarn her of evils. A woman worth a hundred men, in my opinion.
Honorary Mention: Sailor Venus
Sailor Venus gets an honorary mention because she is just so damn cute. She is bubbly, cheerful, and goofy. I love her contradictory personality. Goofy, yet mature. She is dedicated to her mission and takes her duties seriously often ready to jump into battle at a moment's notice, with strategy and decisiveness. She worked alone for a long time before joining the group which gave her experience that someone might overlook at first glance because she hides the burden of her past behind a playful exterior. She can be altruistic, putting the interests of the group ahead of her own, the ultimate protector. Go Sailor Venus!
Sailor Venus gets an honorary mentioned because she is the persona I adopted to survive my trauma. After experiencing severe psychological abuse, I developed a childish exterior that concealed a much more serious interior. It perplexed people because they simply couldn't figure me out
Now that I went through all these characters, it makes me want to rewatch the series all over again!
